Hundred years old and under the top 100 in the world

17 March

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria has been ranked in the top 100 worldwide for Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies by the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The QS World University Rankings rank the top tertiary institutions around the world in 46 subjects, allowing the quality of universities to be compared with that of their peers and highlighting fields where universities have particular strengths, among the various academic subject areas.

The Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Prof Johan Buitendag, notes the special significance of this ranking in the Faculty’s centenary year: ‘Hundred years old and under the top hundred in the world! Our value of academic excellence has now finally been evidenced. I am excited that the QS has formally established the category ‘Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies’, as Theology’s performance was very difficult to be bracketed out in the past.’

He adds that the Faculty has the vocation to practise life-giving theology in such a way that the love of God reaches all. ‘This recognition is the crown on 100 years of dedication and devotion of scholars, fellows, associates and students.’

In compiling these rankings, the QS Rankings organisation evaluated 4 438 universities. The University of Pretoria is now ranked in 16 subject categories in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
