Prof Theo van Wyk re-elected as National Secretary of Southern African Organists’ Society

9 June

The Head of the Department of UP Arts, Prof Theo van Wyk, has been re-elected as the National Secretary of the Southern African Organists’ Society (SAKOV). He was first appointed in this capacity in 2012. Prof Van Wyk is also the chairman and panel convenor of the society’s bursary scheme, which supports academic endeavours related to the organ and organ-building.

SAKOV was founded in 1980 with the dual aims of promoting church music and providing a professional body to serve the interests of organists. The society has since gained a global reputation as one of the most respected institutions representing a single instrument. It provides a link between organists and other interested parties, and supplies subject-related information and guidance to in excess of 1 000 members. SAKOV also serves in an advisory capacity and lays down guidelines and recommendations regarding organists’ salaries and service contracts. The society awards a range of substantial study bursaries every year, with the aim of advancing and maintaining the quality of organ playing and research in church music.
