Forty Five Years of Biomedical Engineering at UCT
The history of biomedical engineering at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital can be traced back to the 1950s, when the first activity in the field was the work in nuclear medicine by Allan Cormack that eventually led to computer assisted tomography and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1979.
In 1969, the Department of Biomedical Engineering was established owing to the increasing importance and contribution of this field to medical research and health care.
2014 marks the 45th anniversary and our commitment to biomedical engineering relevant to health and wellbeing of all South Africans is as strong today as it was in 1969.
