Notification: Compliance with traffic rules on UP campuses and general safety awareness
29 March
In compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, the University of Pretoria continuously monitors on-duty incidents and injuries, and then reports thereon to the relevant the structures, as prescribed by the Act.
Recently several incidents/injuries involving pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and vehicles were brought to our attention. Staff, students and contractors should please take note of the following:
-
Normal traffic rules apply to all persons using the roads on the University’s campuses. Cyclists and motorcyclists are also requested to make sure that they comply with the traffic rules.
-
The speed limit on all campuses is 35 km/h.
-
Pedestrians must keep their eyes open and look where they are going. They must remain alert to their surroundings and should rather not use earphones or talk on their cell phones while walking.
-
Cyclists are requested to look out for pedestrians on the routes between buildings where vehicles are not allowed.
-
Please use the parking areas allocated for motorcycles and bicycle racks.
-
Motorcycle access to the campus is restricted to vehicle routes. Motorcycles are not allowed on pedestrian routes.
-
Bicycles may not be parked next to or locked to general balustrades and handrails as this blocks pedestrian routes and may be an obstruction during emergency evacuation.
-
Golf carts should, as far as possible, be used only on the ring road and should utilise pedestrian routes only to gain access to buildings.
-
Parking bays allocated to handicapped persons may not be misused.
Your friendly cooperation will be much appreciated.
