B Sc 4 Augmented Programme

 B Sc 4 Augmented Programme

WHAT IS B.Sc4 PROGRAMME?
The B.Sc4 has two streams, the B.Sc4 (Augumented) programme and the B.Sc4 (Foundation) programme.
1. BSc4 (Augmented)
This is a four-year degree with an extended support programme for applicants from disadvantaged schools. First year study is spread over two years. Applicants require a NSC-Deg with 26 or more APS points and English and LO at Level 4 and Mathematics at Level 3 and Agricultural Science or Life Science or Physical Science at Level 3. Quintile 1&2 schools.

It is for students from disadvantaged schools, who are interested in science degrees, but whose matric results are slightly below Faculty entry requirements. Students are admitted into first year B.Sc but initially take fewer courses with extra tutorials and practicals, and a course in Scientific Communication. The first year of the degree is therefore spread over a maximum of two years during which students can also take some second year modules. Thereafter students carry the normal load for their degrees. Thus students take four years to complete a three-year Science degree, having progressed more slowly, but being more assured of success.
The criteria for admission are:

  • Applicants must be from a disadvantaged school
  • Senior Certificate with full matriculation exemption
  • At least 28 matric points
  • Higher Grade E or Standard Grade B for Mathematics
  • Higher Grade E or Standard Grade B for either Physical Science, Biology or Agricultural Science

2. BSc4 (Foundation)
If you are from a disadvantaged school, have a full matric exemption but your matric points or Grades are not sufficient for the BSc4 (Augmented) option, this is for you! This programme is a modification of the Science Foundation Programme (SFP), which has been in existence on the Pietermaritzburg campus since 1991 and on the Westville campus since 1999. Students will be admitted into the BSc degree programme, and offered full year courses that improve their knowledge and practical and study skills in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In addition, concerted attention is given to science literacy, and the programme places a particular emphasis on developing the study and life skills of students, so providing a solid grounding for their future studies.
The criteria for admission are:

  • Applicants must be from a disadvantaged school
  • Senior Certificate with matriculation exemption
  • At least 20 matric points
  • Standard Grade F for Mathematics
  • Standard Grade F for either Physical Science, Biology or Agricultural Science
  • Good performance on selection tests in Mathematics, Science and English
