Election/appointment of Council members by the Convocation

The University of Pretoria plays an important role nationally and makes a significant contribution to South Africa’s international standing. Council is the University’s governing body and as such it has a fiduciary duty and is ultimately responsible for determining the University’s strategic direction.

At its meeting of 15 March , Council – in accordance with the amended section 48(7) of the Statute and the approved Institutional Rules of the University – approved that the following competencies be considered as the minimum requirements for the four Alumni members that are to be elected by the Convocation to serve on the Council of the University:

Position 1:     A qualified auditor with appropriate seniority and experience so as to be able to serve on the Audit, IT and Risk Management Committee of Council.

Position 2:     A person with the appropriate qualifications, background and a proven track record in finance and investing so as to be in the position of being elected as a member of an investment committee overseeing a multi-billion investment portfolio.

Position 3:     A person with an appropriate qualification who has contributed significantly to the general well-being of the University over a number of years.

Position 4:     An experienced person with appropriate qualifications and relevant expertise in the IT and related fields, which will enable such person to play a governance oversight role on Council with regards to the IT and related systems of the University.

The Convocation of the University of Pretoria consists of:

  • All persons who have obtained a qualification, as approved by the Senate and Council, from the University;
  • the Principal, the Vice-Principals, the Executive Directors, the Registrar, the Deans of faculties, the academic employees on the permanent staff of the University, professors emeriti, other retired academic employees and other persons as the Council may determine; and
  • all persons (other than the Principal, Vice-Principals, etc referred to above), who immediately before the commencement of the Statute were members of the Convocation of the University.

After the closure of nominations, the Short-listing Committee, consisting of the President of the Convocation, the Principal, the Chairperson of Council and the Chairperson of TuksAlumni or their respective representatives will draw up a list of the most suitable nominees from the Convocation members who were duly nominated.
